Abstract :
Key features of the strict liability provisions of the UK Consumer Protection Act of 1987 (CPA) and major implications of this legislation for developers of safety-critical software are presented. The CPA legislation implemented a European Community Directive requiring EC member states to introduce, before the end of July 1988, national laws imposing strict liability on producers of defective products. Civil liability, criminal liability, and consumer safety under the CPA are discussed.<>
