  • Abstract
Describes the application of programmable controllers in the field of continuous process control. In the example considered programmable controllers have been used to fully automate two major blast furnace installations at SIDMAR NV steel works in Belgium. The furnace reflects the application of state of the art technology both in terms of choice of control system and in the exploitation of the latest advances in iron and steel processing. For example, the furnaces are fired using powder coal injection systems in conjunction with conventional coke firing. Powder coal injection is achieved by first finely crushing the coal under control of a GEC GEM 80 PROGEM control and instrumentation system. The powder coal is then injected under nitrogen top pressure via up to 26 injectors located at the base of the furnace. The injected coal exhibits the properties of a fluid and enables optimum control and more efficient combustion than is possible using conventional coke, as the sole energy source. The PID control and sequential control for this system is provided by GEM 80/313 control and instrumentation systems operating in redundant configuration
