  • Abstract
This paper presents the study on data organization and structure in spatial database designs. An object-oriented spatial database model is developed for coalfield geological hazards taking into account the unique characteristics of coalfield geological hazard data structure. The model is successfully applied to the construction of a spatial database of coalfield geological hazards with Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools. There are many advantages with UML modeling and CASE methodology in spatial database design and implementation. These advantages include a solution in characterizing and realizing the object-oriented spatial vector data, an established relationship among the element, the object, and the relation to effectively link the properties and behaviors of a spatial object, and a self generation of Geodatabase spatial database with dynamic data input. The Spatial Database of Coalfield Geological Hazards developed in this study retains most GIS functions with added capability of self-generating codes to realize such functions as two-way query between graphic-objects and property data, the buffer analysis, and new surface features restrictions.
