Abstract :
The authors discuss the development of ion engines as the most advanced form of electric propulsion thrusters. It is suggested that the SAT-2 mission offers a unique opportunity to flight test a pre-operational ion propulsion system. In order to maximise the probability of success of such a challenging mission, the proven OTS approach to use redundant technologies to minimize risk is to be pursued. For operational use, it is therefore mandatory to embark sufficient technological and functional redundancy on-board so that no single points of failure are present in the high-technology elements of the ion propulsion package
