Abstract
The author is concerned with an appraisal of the complexity of test equipment, relating the measurement integrity needs of an organization, to the economic choices available, consistent with the need to seek a minimum real cost support solution. A review is made of the factors affecting the increasing complexity of test equipment, focusing on the decreasing cost of firmware as the principle driving force in the introduction of increasingly more sophisticated and complex equipment
