Abstract
Reviews the performance limitations of SCM broadcast LANs. Absolute limits to CNR have been established which are determined by the laser RIN and third order intermodulation distortion and hence are independent of receiver noise characteristics. This allows the maximum number of nodes and the modulation scheme to be determined at the planning stage. It appears that AM broadcast SCM television distribution LANs require laser RIN and distortion levels at or beyond the limits of current directly-modulated devices
