Vessel traffic systems (VTS) are defined as anything connected with the movement of maritime traffic. The author describes the practical application of this definition, based on the equipment and procedures used in the Port of London Authority´s Thames navigation service. The development of systems and hardware since 1959 is described, and potential developments, including radar systems, are discussed
