  • Abstract
    A 400 Mb/s multimedia LAN (local area network) with a slotted-ring architecture is described. This LAN provides communication network functions necessary for multimedia communication for offices, plants, and campuses. The LAN features integration of multiple media such as voice, data, image, and video; and interconnection of low- to medium-speed LANs. The authors also discuss the future of multimedia LANs based on optical techniques such as optical signal processing, optical amplification, and coherent optical transmission
