Abstract :
Summary form only given. The aim of the annual W2GIS workshop is to bring together specialists from academia and industry working in the field of Web-based and wireless GIS. W2GIS 2003 was the 3rd in the series of workshops whose first edition was held in Kyoto, Japan, in 2001, followed by the second edition held in Singapore in 2002. The 2003 edition was held in the beautiful and historical city of Rome. The call for papers attracted 24 papers, which were submitted by authors from 16 countries and 3 continents. These results confirm the internationality of the research area. After an extensive peer review, 12 papers were selected for presentation at the workshop and inclusion in the proceedings. The accepted papers relate to topics that range from data management and retrieval, to novel platforms and architectures, to mobile applications. Several issues in the emerging field of Web-based and wireless GIS remain challenging and will provide ground for further investigation and discussion in future editions of the workshop.
