  • Abstract
Considers the simple back reflection geometries which are generalised to take account of finite target size and roughness, and different types of diffuser, illumination and imaging geometries. The phenomenology so established is applicable to a wide variety of active remote sensing systems. Bearing in mind that optical physicists rarely observe in the back-scattering direction whilst radar engineers rarely do otherwise, it would appear prudent in situations where multiple scattering may occur, to check its magnitude in case re-assessment of system performance is necessary
