Abstract :
Oceanographic and water quality investigations often require an integrated approach to sampling. This integrated sampling couples intensive field measurements from a vessel with continuous measurements at selected locations. Real time collection and analysis of continuous data enables researchers to adjust field sampling locations during cruises to fit the oceanographic conditions, thereby obtaining more meaningful data in a cost- effective manner. Real time data acquisition and processing provides a viable, cost- effective solution to the increasing demand for continuous oceanographic and water quality data; allows for verification of proper system operation; and reduces data processing and report preparation time and cost. Recent developments have made real time data collection via radio telemetry inexpensive and cost effective. The development of such a system is presented in this paper.
