  • Abstract
Future broadband ISDNs are likely to be based on a new transfer technique known as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). The emergence of these broadband ATM networks will bring about new concepts in providing telecommunication services, such as a real-time variable bit rate (VBR) connection. Supporting VBR video on an ATM network however raises a number of traffic control problems, especially in a multiservices environment. For example, VBR video cannot be allowed to cause cell loss on the CBO services, and at the same time VBR video must be protected against excessive cell loss. This protection must not be at the expense of bandwidth utilisation efficiency, otherwise the gain of VBR video will be nullified. These issues are addressed carefully particularly in relation to an ATM network known as the Orwell Ring
