Abstract
The authors report the results of tests of single-mode optical waveguides in Si. They investigate both TE and TM polarisations and find agreement with theoretical predictions. The experimentally measured horizontal half-intensity widths were as expected, but the guided mode profile appeared broader. The small size of the waveguide in the vertical direction meant that coupling between input laser beam and the guided mode profile is not efficient and substrate modes are also excited
