Abstract
The alarming and potentially catastrophic hurricane evacuation problems recently identified by comprehensive, quantitative studies are defined and described. The evolution of our current hurricane vulnerability is tracked and the struggle to prevent thousands of deaths from a future hurricane strike in densely-populated coastal areas is examined. The paper then explains the complexity of the current hurricane warning and evacuation dilemma. Finally, current as well as future alternative solutions to the problems are set forth.
