Abstract
The use of dynamic reactive power compensation devices, such as a Static Var Compensator or STATCOM, have been evaluated at power plants. The devices can be used to provide the dynamic reactive power allowing the generator to increase the active power output but maintaining the same power factor interconnection requirements. This paper describes how to evaluate a dynamic reactive power device for a generation application and discusses modeling concerns as well as sizing considerations. Nearly all thermal power plants could potentially benefit from the application of an SVC. However, base load plants or critical units would yield the best return on investment since they are operated continuously at maximum output, thus making use of the additional capacity.
