Abstract :
X11, Open Look and Motif are window and graphical user interface technologies that are now becoming available from vendors. Networked window systems such as X and NeWS allow the user to run their application on one machine and have a multi-window, graphical user interface to that application from their desktop. The new technology of networked window systems is accompanied by second generation graphical user interface designs such as Open Look and Motif. Standard user interface designs allow the user to concentrate on learning about the functionality of a new application, rather than learning an application-specific user interface. After several years of development, hardware vendors are announcing availability of the new toolkits and window systems. Independent software vendors are in the process of porting to the new technology
