Abstract
A three-dimensional finite element method proposed by Zienkiewicz et al (1978) based on linear diffraction theory of waves is used to analyse wave interaction with large vertical submerged cylinders of circular, square, rectangular and elliptical sections having the same area. The results of the investigation are presented in terms of normalized forces, moments about the base of the structure and phase shifts as a function of the scattering parameter for a given submergence ratio. The numerical results are checked for their validity by comparing with the solution of boundary integral method and published experimental results.
