Abstract
Marine corers are principally designed to provide the maximum amount of sample with a minimum amount of sediment disturbance and effort. The designs have evolved from a combination of intuitive judgement by the designers and through trial and error at sea. More recent studies have placed emphasis on modeling corer dynamics, maximizing those forces which increase corer penetration and minimizing those forces which impede core entry and subsequent core recovery.
