Abstract :
Physical mechanisms of chaos are explained in terms of the change of the oscillation frequency. The system is a third order autonomous RLC circuit family including a type of nonlinear inductor which consists of one diode and two linear inductors. The circuit equation of this family is given by two linear second order equations whose oscillation frequencies are considerably different, and these two equations are connected to each other by the switching operation of the diode. It is clarified that the switchover of these oscillation frequencies causes a folding mechanism. Moreover, the Poincare map is derived strictly as a one-dimensional mapping, thereby explaining the generation of chaos
