Abstract
A milliactuator (moving-suspension secondary actuator) comprised of a pair of piezo-elements driving a partially etched thick loadbeam, provides increased servo bandwidth and reduced track-misregistration in a hard disk drive. A drive populated with 18 mm milliactuator assemblies with first torsion frequency (T1) at 6 kHz provided 60% higher servo bandwidth (0 dB open-loop crossover) compared to without the milliactuator. Further improvements to the milliactuator dynamics, sampling rate and computational time have potential to provide up to 100% higher servo bandwidth. The milliactuator provides a low cost, enhanced performance solution for high track densities.
