    In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the demand for improved man/machine interfaces for consumer goods. The driving force has been the brown goods market supplying items such as VCRs and CD hi-fi systems. The paper concentrates on the new generation of speech synthesis devices which are rapidly opening up new opportunities for man/machine interfaces.<>
