Abstract
When the original KiloStream systems were developed a major consideration was the repair and maintenance aspect. Centralised alarm gathering for common equipment failure was implemented, but maintenance using a loop set on a data circuit had to be initiated from that circuit, using inband signalling. The philosophy deployed on the 4th generation system gives the network authority the option of centralised control from a duplicated cluster of DEC VAX computers or local control of a network of up to 10 multiplexers using a personal computer. A typical application is given
