Abstract :
To meet the need for system characterisation the Local Network Test Facility has been set up at British Telecom Research Laboratories. This facility contains samples of a wide range of the cable types and installation practices used in the BTUK network. These cables, signal generation and measurement equipment and transmission performance testers are interconnected under computer control to establish a flexible automated test environment with which to simulate the whole range of practical network conditions in a controlled laboratory environment. Switch matrices are used to reconfigure the measurement equipment between calibration, self-testing and measurement modes of operation. Relay units are used to control cable lengths and to configure alternative loop constitutions
