Abstract
The application of optical radar or lidar to sense ocean internal waves from a surface platform is examined theoretically and experimentally. An experiment conducted in Caribbean waters using a Q-switched Nd-YAG laser transmitter and a range-gated photoreceiver showed that internal waves near the mixed layer-thermocline interface are detectable.
