Abstract
The authors describe the design of a system for real time analysis of fetal phonography signals, based on the Texas Instruments TMS320 DSP chip. It is intended that this design will form the basis of a real-time fetal monitor for use in clinical trials. The data capture requirements are assessed, and the hardware design discussed. Algorithms have been developed for determination of heart rate, and these will be extended to include detection of fetal breathing and other fetal heart sounds
