Abstract
Water depth limits are the primary constraints on bulk cargo trade involving ports of the United States. The adoption of wide beam, restricted draft geometry is an alternative to dredging applicable to most bulk trades. Comparative freight rates of conventional and restricted draft designs are given for a representative case study. An assessment of the current status of restricted draft technology is presented.
