Web image transcoding and a proxy-based solution for small devices

Small portable devices like personal digital assistants (PDA) are increasingly becoming a common tool for Internet browsing. These devices are recently coming to the market with Internet-ready features such as Wi-Fi ready connections. One of the challenging tasks about Internet browsing on these devices is to display and browse images downloaded from Web servers. This is due to the fact that these devices have limited capabilities in terms of device resources such as display/size, memory, storage, computation power, and battery power. In this paper we first introduce some popular transcoding technologies, and then we propose a proxy-based transcoding solution to enhance small devices to browse Web pages efficiently.
