Abstract
An attempt is made to develop a stable and numerically robust calculus for matrices and operators, with reduced or minimal complexity. The author starts by developing a time-varying calculus, where instantaneous operations are characterized and a generalization of the z -transform to express divisibility and rational calculus is found. Next, the author defines scattering operators and orthogonal filters, and develops a method of approximations leading to optimal filter synthesis and linking the two previous items
