Abstract :
Devices to measure the shear stress have been developed earlier by Preston, Vennard, Strauss, and Blau. These instruments are limited to smooth and rigid walls and to cases where the flow direction is known. The differences, however, between measurements of sediment transport and numerical forecasts made it worthwhile to develop a shear stress meter to be deployed in rivers and coastal waters, capable to work during sediment transport and under wave action, both in situ and under laboratory conditions. The designed instrument was tested in a test flume as well as offshore the Isle of Norderney in the North Sea.
