Abstract :
The authors propose regularity as a general structuring paradigm for hierarchically organized knowledge. They uncovered regularity by analyzing existing man made hierarchical knowledge bases. They argue that regularity is an intuitive guide to the construction of hierarchical knowledge bases, and propose a model of hierarchies that embodies regularity. They briefly describe experiments that stressed the role of regularity in hierarchies, and discuss alternative uses of the proposed model of hierarchies to DSSs (decision support systems) in general and active DSSs in particular
