  • Abstract
The purpose of maintenance is the prevention of breakdowns. In the specific case of a power supply organization like the PEN (Province of North Holland Electricity Board), the degree in which this aim is achieved is jointly responsible for the operational dependability of the distribution network. Because the grid is becoming more and more complicated its operational dependability is also influenced by the fact that only those maintenance activities which are absolutely necessary can be carried out. The Stations Department within the PEN organization, responsible for the maintenance of the 150 kV, 50 kV and 10 kV distribution installations in the substations, tries to achieve this aim through optimum utilization of the capital and labour production factors, simultaneously paying great attention to the safety factor. The author gives a description of the maintenance management process operative within this department and of the variables affecting this process
