Abstract
The authors describe EMTEL (energy management on the telephone network), a successful, programmable, integrated time of use (TOU) metering and control system employing `high speed´ telephone line signalling over existing telephone subscriber lines, but completely avoiding usage of the telephone switched network. It is presently undergoing field trials in Brisbane with The South East Queensland Electricity Board
