Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. The author presents a general overview of the place of user interface systems in the current generation of IPSEs and suggests that the current approach is ad hoc and not based on any systematic analysis of user requirements. As far as has been reported, none of the existing IPSEs have designed their user interfaces from any kind of analysis of software engineering activities. He then discusses what are the key issues and requirements in the design of IPSE user interfaces, in particular the management of complexity, and suggest how appropriate solutions should be discovered. It is particularly important that the developers of IPSE user interfaces export their technology to IPSE users. There are clear technical and organisational difficulties in establishing IPSE UI requirements and these are discussed
