Abstract :
There is a school of thought which holds that a user is simply one element of a system. This view of the user elements of a system raises the question of why is it therefore necessary to elevate this type of interface into a discipline/skill area in its own right. Cannot conventional system development techniques be used for the specification and implementation of the interfaces to the user elements? The author addresses this question and uses the MMI project within the ECLIPSE programme for illustration
