This paper gives an overview of one manufacturer´s proprietary network software (SNA) and compares its development and implementation with that of the Open Systems Interconnection standards. The objectives of SNA and OSI are different; SNA provides network services (hierarchical and peer-to-peer) within an IBM network, while OSI permits interworking between networks from different manufacturers
