Abstract :
The inclusion of microprocessors in space instrumentation has provided the benefit of improved measurement resolution, improved reliability, a more efficient use of limited spacecraft resources, and further provides control for the latest complex instruments. It is suggested that most often microprocessors are limited to controlling instruments and providing a simple data buffering to the spacecraft telemetry system. Future developments of on-board intelligence and expert systems are briefly discussed
