Abstract
Block coding is often used in communication systems that use error detection or error correction. Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) and Reed-Solomon codes are block codes that are powerful in correcting independent errors. A description of these codes, algorithms for doing the error correction, and software techniques for performing the necessary calculations are presented. These techniques are relatively easy to program and allow the codes to be implemented with a small microprocessor system. Specific examples of the codes and a description of their implementation on an acoustic telemetry link are given.
