Abstract :
Considers a modified asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) scheme which lends itself to lower bit rate applications. Current primary rate (1544 kbit/s or 2048 kbit/s) facilities can be used instead of the high bandwidth required by the broadband ISDN (BISDN). The method proposed serves to bridge the time and technology gaps between ISDN and BISDN. A simple multi-priority transport scheme is proposed. The architecture is based on an asynchronous time division multiplexing scheme. The implementation of the synchronous cells in effect provides the integration of synchronous and asynchronous transfer mode. The purpose is to consider (i) traffic models of interactive data, file transfer, and variable rate video encoded bit streams; and (ii) the proposed transport mechanism
