Abstract
Mercury Communications Ltd was created as a direct result of the UK Government´s policy of telecommunications liberalisation. Formed in 1981 by a consortium of Barclays Merchant Bank, British Petroleum and Cable and Wireless, it is now 100% owned by the latter. It is the UK´s second public telecommunications operator, its licence having been granted under the 1984 Telecommunications Act. Using state of the art fibre optic transmission, its network now covers much of England and reaches into Scotland and Wales. Through the use of latest technology to deliver services to customers, and by target marketing, it has already established a position as a genuine competitor to British Telecom
