Abstract
It has long been recognised that effective processing of natural language involves a considerable amount of inference. Most work in this area has concentrated on the substantial amount of commonsense knowledge that such systems must have access to, and on the development of mechanisms for making good use of this knowledge. The paper argues that the ability to perform inferences is critical at every level of linguistic processing, and furthermore that the kind of inference required is more difficult than is usually realised
