Abstract :
The design of microwave active circuits relies increasingly on the use of linear (TOUCHSTONE, SUPERCOMPACT), and nonlinear (ANAMIC, HARMONICA, LIBRA), CAD programs. The most recent additions to the nonlinear analysis scene, HARMONICA and LIBRA, both use the harmonic balance method to solve the nonlinear circuit equations. The authors discuss the application of an `in-house´ harmonic balance program, with overall circuit optimisation, to the design of a MESFET frequency doubler, from 7 GHz to 14 GHz. The large-signal model used to describe the behaviour of the NE71000 chip active device, and the optimising harmonic balance program is described
