Abstract
The authors review state of the art developments on fluoride optical glasses and fibres before discussing in detail some of the optoelectronic component developments and systems aspects under investigation in the British Telecom research laboratories. They discuss the fibres and the optical sources and detectors, and describe an experimental 2.55 μm transmission system. The advantages in terms of long span capability to be gained from fluoride optical transmission systems are considered
