Modern tools used in distributed information systems modeling are reviewed, and principal techniques of system design are described. An example of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) application in designing the Chernobyl Database for the Ukrainian Emergency Ministry is shown, advantages and opportunities of this modeling language that set it apart from other techniques are discussed
