Abstract
The missing ingredient of most office technologies currently in the market place is the ability to communicate and in particular to communicate naturally without changing the entire office structure. Moreover the means of communication must satisfy human requirements not those of the machine, people speak therefore office systems must handle speech effectively. British Telecom now has a system which provides the missing ingredient-its effect on office practices within the UK remains to be explored
