Abstract
The article identifies what opportunities there are for the use expert systems within office automation. It examines what office functions have been computerized using conventional technology and what requirements cannot be met. The characteristics of this shortfall are compared with the capabilities of expert systems. The paper then reviews some properties that expert systems must exhibit if they are to be used in office automation systems
