Abstract
The problem of simultaneous estimation of both the transmitted signal and the impulse response samples in a digital communication channel is considered in this paper. In particular, the effective use of polynomial filtering techniques in such application is demonstrated. It is shown that a linear algorithm can not solve the problem, so that polynomial filters of higher order are necessary. The derivation of the polynomial estimator is based on a suitable representation of the signal-channel behavior as a hybrid system with Markov switching.
