Abstract
This work presents a comparison of minimizing the voltage total harmonic distortion at a load bus where it is desired to maintain the displacement power factor or the power factor at a desired level. The performance is discussed by means of numerical examples taken from existing publications. Paybacks of less than one year can be expected. Finally, the major attribute of This work is that it, unlike conventional approaches, guarantees convergence to the optimal solution. This accomplishment is a direct result from the improvement in the algorithm in which provisions are made to identify and to avoid capacitor values, which would create resonance conditions, the problem formulation in which the effect of the transmission line impedance on the load voltage is included while calculating the optimal capacitor value, and frequency dependent nature of the supply source.
