Abstract :
Describes a generalised sonar simulation program intended for use in a research environment to assist in the design of signal processing algorithms. The program has been designed to provide a flexible framework within which users may model a wide range of sonar types operating in different scenarios. The results of the simulation may be used to characterise the actual system performance and so provide valuable information for the design and testing of new signal processing techniques. The authors assess the value of simulation in algorithm design and evaluation. By identifying the features required of a `general-purpose´ simulator they explain the concepts behind the generalised system/environment model adopted. A description of the simulator itself is then given, with particular emphasis being placed upon the means whereby the stated design goals have been achieved
