Abstract
Ferranti ORE Ltd. won financial support from the Offshore Energy Technology Board for a research and development project on sub-bottom image and record enhancement. The project sought to exploit advanced image processing techniques to enhance the quality of seismic records to facilitate human interpretation, to undertake direct quantitative measurement of sedimentary properties using statistical and other information contained in the calibrated seismic return, and to implement the developed techniques in a commercially viable form. This paper describes a part of this project carried out by research workers at Heriot-Watt University and British Geological Survey. In particular it discussed the derivation of a synthetic seismic model which could be used to evaluate the suitability of image processing techniques and as an aid in the development and validation of processing software for use on actual field data
