Abstract
Practical device implementations of nonlinear waveguides may utilise the defocussing nonlinearity associated with the fundamental absorption edge of semiconductors. A suitable waveguide structure would involve a nonlinear guiding layer bounded by cladding layers which are non-absorbing and hence linear at the operating wavelength. The analysis of TE modes in a planar waveguide structure based upon the above concept has been given. The analysis is extended to the description of two-dimensional guiding provided by a ridge guide structure
